Went for a run again this morning. It was sunny, super windy, and warm - 60's - so the Bosphorous was very wavy. Waves were crashing up onto the concrete pathway along the river, so I got splashed a few times, which was fun. Tomorrow we're going to Ankara, the political capital of Turkey, so we went to the bus station to get tickets. Subway stations in Turkey often have small established shops, and I found some really cheap knock off converse, so I got two pair, put on one of them, and left my beat up ones with the vendor who said he'd throw them away for me.
Afterward, we went to the spice bazaar, which is a smaller enclosed market where most of the shops sell spices or other food items. The bazaar is lined with small mountains of cinnamon, saffron, mint, various peppers. I could have stood in there for hours just inhaling. In one of the shops, I was offered dried caviar, which I'd never had, so I tried it, and did not like it. Thankfully my mom had just bought some dried pineapple, so I was able to get the taste out of my mouth. =]
That evening we met up with another one of my mom's friends and her 15 year old daughter. I point out her age, because she did not seem it at all. I knew she was younger, but I felt like I was talking to a 20 year old, until I asked my mom how old she was. She was stylish and mature, and rather insightful about the people around her. She asked me all about American media, which it turns out, she knows more about than I, ha. We're both dabbling in photography, so we talked about that for a bit as well. The four of us went to dinner at another rather nice restaurant and had more fish, wine, and bread. =] A common and delicious combination. She and her mother were both very warm and real. So far I have found the Turkish to be very warm hearted.
